Памятник Степану Шаумяну в Степанакерте

Stepanakert, the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, had a distinctive landscape of monumental art. Memorial fountains, statues, sculptures, bas-reliefs, mosaics and small architectural forms reflected the work of generations of Armenian, Azerbaijani and international artists.

What the project will do

Many of these works have been destroyed, altered or are at risk of disappearing. Traces in Stone will document at least 150 works and record available information about their authors, history, location and context.

The project will also collect and digitize archival materials, interview artists and witnesses, create an online catalogue and interactive map, and involve students, volunteers and the public in documenting Stepanakert’s monumental art.

Why this work matters

A reliable record can support future research, education and heritage protection. By preserving photographs, records and memories, the project aims to keep knowledge of the city’s public art accessible to former residents, researchers, educators and future generations.

Long-term access

The catalogue and digital archive are intended to remain available through the Culture and Tourism Development Agency’s website and an online repository. The project’s documentation and methods may also help others record cultural heritage at risk.
